Upgrading from Standard to Enterprise [message #275414]

I have a database in 10.2.0.1.0 standard.
I want to go to 10.2.0.3.0 enterprise.

Is export/import the only way to achieve this?

I don't think so.
I'd create a new ORACLE_HOME using the EE version.
Shutdown the DB, change ORACLE_HOME variable, & start the DB.

Ok the bigger picture is that we want to migrate the environment to another server.

Can an RMAN backup suffice?

* The database has scores of tablespaces by design --> Actually, it is the database to support PeopleSoft Financials

Server A:

* Single Node Oracle 10.2.0.1.0
* Standard edition
* windows enterprise x32 bit

Infrastructure 2:
=======================
* 2-node Oracle Rac 10.2.0.3.0
* Enterprise edition
* Windows enterprise x64 bit
* Other Oracle databases reside here.
* Purpose: Driving a DB Consolidation Initiative

Question

expdp/impdp or rman duplicate (but I'm not sure of this latter as you change your word size, of course the documentation says if this is possible and a quick look to restrictions on duplicate gives the answer in less than a minute).

"BEST" is a function of what criteria is important to your organization.

The switch between 32 bit & 64 bit is documented in a Metalink Note.
Sorry that you'll have to Search for this note as I don't have its number memorized.

As I discovered from 1st hand experience, the DB will open after being cloned between different architectures; but throws errors when trying almost anything that worked previously.

I found the Note by using the errors as Search criteria in Metalink.

I suspect that you won't need to follow this Note if you use exp/imp.

So as always, there are trade offs. Pick your poison.
