Hi,

I want to uninstall oracle 8.1.7.4 and install 9.2.0.1 on the solaris 9 box. If I run the runinstaller and deinstall oracle product, will it remove the entire 8.1.7 software????? Will I be able to continue with the installation of 9.2.0 right away?
Help greatly appreciated..

Actaully what you want if you want to uninstall complete Oracle 8i software then it is expected behaviour.
or if you want to just remove ORACLE 8i database then use DBCA.

and when you unintall oracle 8i software you can continue Oracle 9i software without exit on current window.

regards
Taj

Taj,

Thanks for your reply. Actually I want to uninstall the entire 8i software and install 9i software on the same mount point since I am running out of the disk space on the server.

"when you unintall oracle 8i software you can continue Oracle 9i software without exit on current window."

So, you mean I can uninstall 8i using the oracle 9i runInstaller and continue with the 9i installation after uninstalling 8i software?? I had a thought that oracle 8i software cannot be removed using oracle 9i Installer.

Thanks for your replies.

Ask your Sysadmin to mount the CD
or
just copy the contents/ftp of the media to a local directory in remote server.

Thanks,Mahesh. But the problem is the server is in different location and the system admin will not be able to do that for me. The second option, to ftp the contents, I am not sure if I can do that. When I insert the cd in my machine, its starting up with the window of the installer. So how to do that? Thanks..

Hi Taj,

I tried uninstalling 8i using 9i installation software,I was not able to do it.. Now I transferred the 8i installation files to the server and uninstalled the 8i software. But still there are some files left out in the ORACLE_HOME location like bin, install, dbs, lib etc.. I am planning to install 9i in the same mount point. Is it ok to continue with 9i installation with these files in the ORACLE_HOME or do I have to remove these files manually?? Please advise. Thanks much!

Hi all,

I removed all the files and the oracle_home directory is empty now. When I ran runinstaller for 9i, its giving me the below error:
You do not have permission to write to the inventory /appl/oracle/oraInventory. Installation cannot continue.: Permission denied

Please note that, I had oracle 8i in /appl/oracle/product/8.1.7
and now i have renamed /appl as /oracle92. I dont know if I have to change something else to install 9i.
Anyone please help on this...Waiting for your replies..thanks..
